Glorifying God

1994-05-01

1Co 10:31 Whether ye eat, or drink, or whatever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

Glory = Manifestation of God's inherent power and rulership which results in supreme worth being attributed to Him

God is inherently glorious. He is glorified whenever He is seen or shows up. We can bring Him glory by:

1) Acknowledging the supreme worth of God through our unreserved heart-mind-soul-strength obedience

2) Living our lives in such risky dependence upon Him that He regularly intervenes in answering our prayers.

3) Proclaiming to others how God has revealed Himself both in answering our prayers and in His Word.

4) Demonstrating the character of God in our own lives so He is revealed through us to others (now and then)

5) Developing Christlike character in others (disciplemaking) so the above means can be multiplied

Glory is:

Received as a Reward by Faithful Believers

God's glory (self-revelation) is seen to some degree in granting forgiveness (in justification) and bestowing His Holy Spirit (in sanctification), but reaches it's greatest manifestation in pouring out His blessings upon faithful believers (in glorification). If our goal is to see God get the greatest glory (have the greatest opportunity to display His goodness) then we will either strive to be the greatest sinners (for Him to display the maximum mercy) or we'll strive for the most glory (the more reward He can give, the more of His goodness is displayed). Anyone in between is just lukewarm. (Phil 3:14-15)

Da 12:2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame [and] everlasting contempt. 3 And they that are wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever  13 But go thou thy way till the end: for thou shalt rest, and then rise to receive your allotted inheritance at the end of the days. (NIV)

Joh 12:23...hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified. 24...if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. 25 He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it to life eternal. 26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will [my] Father glorify.

Php 3:21 change our lowly body, that it may be fashioned like his glorious body...

Col 1:27 God make known the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

Col 3:1 If ye then were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. 2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, [who is] our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. 5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; immorality, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

2Pe 1:17 received...honour and glory, voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Yearned for by those who Earn it

How to lose it

Live in sin Ro 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Care more what men think than God thinks Joh 12:43 For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

Seek it now Joh 5:44 How can ye believe, who receive glory one from another, and seek not the glory from God only? (Mt 6)

Live in pride Ac 12:23...angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten by worms, and died.

Be unthankful Ro 1:21  they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in imaginations

Be ashamed Mr 8:38 Whoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. Faith Ro 4:20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God...

Not seek it Mal 2:2 If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay [it] to heart, to give glory to my name, saith the LORD of hosts, I will even send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings: yea, I have cursed them already, because ye do not lay [it] to heart.

How to gain it (hard way) Savior Loyalty/Reputation; Motivation=Glory; Attitude=Joy; Resource=HS grace; Truth=Basis.

Suffering Lu 24:26 Ought not Christ to suffer these things, and to enter into his glory?

2Co 4:16 For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward [man] is renewed day by day. 17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh out for us a far more exceeding [and] eternal weight of glory; 18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen [are] temporal; but the things which are not seen [are] eternal.

Ro 5:2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only [so], but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

Joh 21:19 He spoke, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith to him, Follow me.

Heb 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man. 10 For it was fitting for him, for whom [are] all things, and by whom [are] all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

1Pe 2:20 what glory if buffeted for your faults bear it patiently? but suffer for doing good bear it patiently...acceptable with God.

1Pe 4:13 rejoice...partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. 1Pe 4:14 reproached for the name of Christ, happy [are ye]; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.

How to gain it (slightly easier)

Seek it in doing good Ro 2:7 To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: 10 But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, also to the Greek:

Make Disciples 1Th 2:19 our hope, joy, crown of glorying?..you in the presence of Lord at his coming? 20 ye are our glory & joy

Keep Perspective Ro 8:18 reckon the sufferings of this present time not worthy to compare with the glory...shall be revealed in us

Loyally Love Christ 1Co 2:8 for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9 But as it is written, Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for them that love him.

Be sanctified 2Th 2:13...God has chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth: 14 To which he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Like-minded Unity Ro 15:5 God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus: 6 That ye may with one mind [and] one mouth glorify God 7 accept one another, as Christ also us to the glory of God.

Live in Faith & Hope 1Pe 1:11...testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. 21 Who by him do believe in God, that raised him from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.

Holy living 1Co 6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

Walk in Spirit Ro 8:30 pedestinate...called: and whom he called...justified: and whom he justified...glorified. (see Ro 8:1-29 KJV)

Respond to God Ro 9:23 might make known riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had before prepared for glory...

Walk according to wisdom 1Co 2:7 we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery...which God ordained before the world to our glory

Be faithful Heb 3:2...faithful to him that appointed him...3 For this [man] was counted worthy of more glory than Moses...

Live the promises 2Pe 1:3 divine power has given all...life & godliness, through the knowledge of him...called us to glory & virtue
