Love, Honor and Obey  © 2016 WF Cobb Truthbase.net DailyTruthbase.Blogspot.com

I. Loving God and then one another takes priority over love of self, all others and things.   Ac 5:29 obey (Heb 13) God rather than men

1Jn 3:23 this is His command: we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another (5X), as He gave us command  Eph 1:4 blameless before Him in love.  Jn 17:22  glory..given them, that they may be perfect in one 26 love..may be in them and I in them.

1Jn 4:12 No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us.

Mt 10:34 "Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. 35 For I have come to 'set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother...Micah 7:6 36 and 'a man's enemies will be those of his own household.' 37 He who loves philos father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38 And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. 39 He who finds his life will lose it,  he who loses his life for My sake will find it. Lk 14:26-27

Mk 3:4 Here are My mother and My brothers! 35 For whoever does the will of God is My brother and My sister and mother. 10:29

II. Father in OT (believed in YHWH, was a member of the community seeking to live in obedience to God's commands) to be obeyed

Gen 24:3 Abe no Canaanite wives  26:34 Esau was 40 he took Hittite wives 35 And they were a grief of mind to Isaac and Rebekah.

*Gen 28:6 Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob...and commanded Gen 2:16 "You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan," 7 Jacob had obeyed his father and his mother and had gone...8 Esau saw that the daughters of Canaan did not please his father Isaac...

*To Adults Ex 20:12 Dt 5:16 Honor #03513 Pr 22:23 piel impv your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may be well with you in the land which the LORD your God is giving you. Cf Col 3:20; Eph 6:1-2

^To Children Col 3:20 Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord.

^Eph 6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 "Honor your father and mother," which is the first commandment with promise

NB obedience is a subset of honor (Ex 5 was given to adults). The word for honor #3513 kavod is often translated glorify.

Disobedience denotes the ungodly 2Tim 3:2 For men will be lovers of themselves, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy...4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!  Rm 1:29... strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving.

III. Failure to honor/obey one's parents resulted in shame/loss of blessing/death

Gen 49 patriarchal blessing/loss (first three sons lost blessing for behavior)  Num 12:14 spit...shame...shut out Num 13&14 generation lost

Heb 12:16 profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel sold his birthright. 17 blessing..rejected: found no place of repentance, Mt 25:10

*Ex 21:17 he that abates 07043 Gen 8:8; 16:5/treats lightly (cx glory/heavy)/curses/lessens/despises his father/mother, shall surely be put to death

1Sam 2:30...for those who honor <03513> Mal 1:6 Me I will honor, and those who despise <0959> Me shall be lightly esteemed/cursed <07043>.

Pr 20:20  Whoso curses/diminishes <07043> his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness. 15:20  despise <0959

Pr 30:11  There is a generation that curses <07043> their father, and does not bless their mother.  Ps 37:22 blessed..inherit; cursed...cut off.

*Lev 20:9 every one that dishonors his father  or his mother shall be surely put to death: he has cursed his father/mother; his blood shall be upon him

Dt 27:12 bless the people 13 curse #779 14 Levites say to all the men of Israel 15 Cursed be the man that makes an idol

16  Cursed be he that dishonors/disrespects/treats lightly #7034 his father or his mother. And all the people shall say, Amen.

*Lev 20:6 mediums...I will set My face against that person and cut him off from his people. 7 Sanctify yourselves, and be holy, for I am  LORD your God. 8  you shall keep My statutes, and perform them: I am the LORD who sanctifies you. 9 'For everyone who curses/diminishes his father or his mother shall surely be put to death. He has cursed his father or his mother. His blood shall be upon him. 10 'The man who commits adultery...

*Dt 21:18 stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey the voice Josh 5:6 of his father/mother, and who, chastened him, will not heed them... 20 say to the elders of his city, 'This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious; he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard.' 21 Then all the men of his city shall stone him to death with stones; so you shall put away the evil from among you, and all Israel shall hear and fear

Pr 13:1 A wise son heeds his father's instruction, But a scoffer does not listen to rebuke. 15:5 A fool despises his father's instruction;  he who receives correction is prudent. 20 A wise son makes a father glad; a foolish man despises his mother.

*Pr 23:22 Listen to your father who begot you, And do not despise your mother when she is old.

IV. Jesus (Lk 2:51) and Paul affirm the OT teaching of obedience (submitting and suffering for following Jesus' commands)

*Mt 15:4 God commanded, saying, 'Honor your father and your mother'; and, 'He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.

*Mt 19:16 eternal life? 17 enter into life, keep the commandments. 18 Which? Jesus said: no murder, adultery, steal, false witness, 19  Honor your father and your mother: and, you shalt love your neighbor as yourself. 20 young man said: All these things have I kept from my youth up: what do I lack? 21 treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. 22 when the young man 23 rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.

1Pt 2:13 submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake 17 Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.  19 For this is commendable, if because of conscience toward God one endures grief, suffering wrongfully. 20 For what credit is it if,

Questions for Reflection/Discussion/Response:

1. What is the basic problem with humanity (hint: Adam and Eve)? Why didn't they obey their Father?

2. How does obedience differ from honor? How does blessing differ from cursing? What does it mean to despise?

3. Why does God ordain authority for His people? How can a person be blessed if they submit when they don't agree/prefer to?

4. What should a believer do if the commands of an authority conflict with God's commands? Conflict with one's conscience?

5. What role does the community of believers play helping people know and obey God (Eph 5:21)? What can go wrong?
