Salvation

1994-01-01 Ephesians 2:4-10

2:4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us, 5 Even when we were dead in sins, has made us alive together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

{Our Story Thus Far: God's grand plan to display His glory in blessing believers reverses the effects of the Fall so that we can be formed into a temple/body which His glory can inhabit. The same power demonstrated in Christ is available to save believers who are in union with Him.}

I. Why We Need Salvation...We're dead meat

Dead/Dominionless  And you being dead - inability to transact any business in the spiritual realm

Disobedient  in trespasses and sins; - the cause of our powerlessness

Dominated according to the prince of the power of the air - the consequence of our disobedience

Deceived fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind - the cause of our domination

Doomed to Destruction the children of wrath - the consequence of our independence (the essence of sin)

II. What Our Salvation Is...A reversal of the effects of the Fall

Justification (forgiveness that restores the relationship) past

Sanctification (restoration to pre-Fall holiness) present

Glorification (restoration to pre-Fall glory) future

III. What Our Salvation Requires...Grace and Faith

Mercy

Love

Grace

Savior-Substitute

Faith

Work

Questions for Reflection/Discussion/Response:

1. What's the difference between being made alive, raised, and seated?

2. Which aspect of Salvation (past, present, future) engenders the most gratitude and praise?

3. What does our need for Salvation suggest about how we should live our lives?

4. How does the fact that Salvation is a process (God is currently saving me) affect our daily behavior?

5. Which "requirement" (#III above) is most emphasized in Christiandom? In Scripture? Why?

6. In what area could you better cooperate with God in staying out of the "sandtraps"?

Verses on Save and Salvation: Justification? Sanctification? Glorification? BC 1/93

Mt 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shall call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

Mt 8:25 And his disciples came to [him], and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish.

Mt 9:21...If I may but touch his garment, I shall be healed/saved. 22 But Jesus turned himself about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith has made you well/saved. And the woman was healed/saved from that hour.

Mt 10:22 And ye shall be hated by all [men] for my name's sake: but he that endures to the end shall be saved.

Mt 16:25 For whoever will save his life shall lose it: and whoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.

Mt 24:13 But he that shall endure to the end, the same shall be saved.

Mr 16:16 He that believes and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believes not shall be damned.

Lu 1:71 That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; 77 To give knowledge of salvation to his people by/for the remission of their sins,

Lu 8:12...they hear; then comes the devil, and takes away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.

Lu 8:36 They also who saw [it] told them by what means he that was possessed by the demons was healed/saved

Lu 9:24 For whoever will save his life shall lose it: but whoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.

Lu 9:54 And when his disciples James and John saw [this], they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elijah did? 55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. 56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save [them]. And they went to another village.

Joh 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him may be saved.

Joh 5:28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, 29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, to the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, to the resurrection of damnation. 34 But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye may be saved.

Joh 10:9 I am the door: by me if any man shall enter, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

Joh 11:12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleeps, he shall do well/be saved.

Ac 2:21 And it shall come to pass, [that] whoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Ac 2:40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this perverse generation.

Ac 7:25 For he supposed his brethren to understand that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not.

Ac 15:1 certain men who came down from Judaea taught the brethren, [and said], Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved. 11 But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.

Ac 16:30...what must I do to be saved? 31 they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shall be saved, and thy house.

Ac 27:20 And when neither sun nor stars in many days appeared, and no small tempest lay on [us], all hope that we should be saved was then taken away. 31 Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, Except these abide in the ship, ye cannot be saved.

Ro 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God to salvation to every one that believes; to the Jew...Greek 17 For in this is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

Ro 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Jesus Christ: 25 Whom God has set forth [to be] a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 26 To declare, [I say], at this time his righteousness: that he may be just, and the justifier of him who believes in Jesus. 30 Seeing [it is] one God, who shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.

Ro 5:6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 8 But God commends his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. 10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. 11 And not only [so], but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the reconciliation.

Ro 8:24 For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man sees, why does he yet hope for?

Ro 10:9 if thou confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in thy heart that God has raised him from the dead, thou shall be saved. 10 For with the heart man believes to righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made to salvation.

Ro 10:13 For whoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. 14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

Ro 11:26 And so all Israel shall be saved...shall come out of Zion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:

Ro 13:11 knowing the time, that now is high time to awake out of sleep: for now [is] our salvation nearer than when we believed.

1Co 1:18 preaching of the cross is to them that are perishing foolishness; but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

1Co 3:15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

1Co 5:5 To deliver such one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

1Co 15:1 Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also ye have received, and in which ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached to you, unless ye have believed in vain.

2Co 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. 9 Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing. 10 For godly sorrow works repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world works death.

Php 1:19 For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,

Php 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. 13 For it is God who works in you both to will and to do of [his] good pleasure.

1Th 5:8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. 9 For God has not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,

2Th 2:13 But we are bound to give thanks always to God for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God has from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth: 14 To which he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.

1Ti 2:4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

1Ti 2:15 However she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.

1Ti 4:16 Take heed to thyself, and to thy doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this...both save thyself, and them that hear you.

2Ti 2:10 I endure all for the sake of the elect, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

2Ti 3:15...thou has known the holy scriptures, which are able to make you wise to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus

2Ti 4:18 the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve [me] to his heavenly kingdom: to whom [be] glory...

Tit 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Spirit; 6 Whom he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; 7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. 8 [This is] a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they who have believed in God may be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable to men.

Heb 1:14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall inherit salvation? 2:1 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let [them] slip. 2 For if the word spoken by angels was steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; 3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by them that heard [him]; 4 God also bearing [them] witness, both with signs and wonders, and with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to his own will? 5 For to the angels he has not put in subjection the world to come, concerning which we speak.

9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man. 10 For it was fitting for him, for whom [are] all things, and by whom [are] all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. 11 For both he that sanctifies and they who are sanctified [are] all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren,

Heb 5:7...he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears to him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; 9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation to all them that obey him;

Heb 6:8 But that which bears thorns and briers [is] rejected, and [is] close to being cursed; whose end [is] to be burned. 9 But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak. 10 For God [is] not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shown toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister. 11 And we desire each one of you to show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope to the end: 12 That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

Heb 7:25...able also to save them to the uttermost that come to God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

Heb 9:28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and to them that look for him he shall appear the second time not to bear sin but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for Him (NIV).

Jas 1:21 Wherefore put away all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

Jas 2:14 What [doth it] profit, my brethren, though a man saith he hath faith, and hath not works? can faith save him?

Jas 5:15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he hath committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. 20 Let him know, that he who converteth a sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.

1Pe 1:3 Blessed [be] the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again to a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith to salvation ready to be revealed in the last time....9 Receiving the end of your faith, [even] the salvation of [your] souls. 10 Of this salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace [that should come] to you:

1Pe 3:21 The like figure to which [even] baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

1Pe 4:17 ...that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if [it] first [beginneth] with us, what shall [be] the end of them that obey not the gospel of God? 18 And if the righteous is scarcely saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?

Jude 1:5 I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not. 23 And others save with fear, pulling [them] out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh. 24 Now to him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present [you] faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,

Re 7:10 And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God who sitteth upon the throne, and to the Lamb. 12 Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, [be] to our God for ever and ever.
