A. Refining/Purifying Fire is anticipated by the OT to Discipline the Disobedient & Purify the Faithful so they can pleasingly serve God  cf 1Pt 1

Mal 3:1 I send My messenger; he will prepare the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you desire, will suddenly come to His temple, even the Messenger of the Covenant Jer 31:31, in whom you delight. 2  But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner's fire and like launderers' soap 3 He will sit as a refiner and a purifier of silver Ps 11; He will purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer to the LORD an offering in righteousness. 4 Then...pleasant to the LORD 5 and I will come near you for judgment...because they do not fear Me 7..You have gone away from My ordinances and have not kept them Heb 10:29

Isa 1:25 I will turn My hand against you, and thoroughly purge away your dross, and take away all your alloy. 33:14  sinners in Zion are afraid; Fearfulness has seized the hypocrites: "Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?" 15 He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly...shuts his eyes from seeing evil: 16 They are the ones who will dwell on the heights, whose refuge will be the mountain fortress. Their bread will be supplied, and water will not fail them. 17 Your eyes will see the king in his beauty and view a land that stretches afar.

Retribution Jer 7:20 burn and not be quenched..23..Obey My voice & I will be your God & you shall be My people 24 Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but followed the counsels and the dictates of their evil hearts, and went backward and not forward...30 done evil in My sight
Zech 13:9 thru fire, refine as silver, test as gold...call on My name,  answer them. 'This is My people'... The LORD is my God'

B. The NT, rooted in Isa 40:1-10 (promised King coming to judge/reward), required a change of mind (repentance) about the Kingdom to escape wrath
Mt 3:6 baptized...confessing their sins. 7 flee from the wrath to come? 8 bear fruits worthy of repentance, 10  every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 11 He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire...12 gather His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.  Cf John 15:5...abide..bear much fruit...6 If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch..is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If you abide in Me and My words abide..My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples Fruit: Eph 5:9; Heb 12:11; Js 3:18 Pr 12:12

Mk 9:41...by no means lose his reward...sea 43-48 If your hand/foot/eye causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to depart/cast into Gehenna, into the fire that is never quenched 49 For everyone will be seasoned with fire, and every sacrifice will be seasoned with salt (faithful endurance). 50 if the salt loses its saltiness, how will you season it? Have salt in yourselves, Lk  9:23-28

Isa 5:24  as the fire devours the stubble, and the flame consumes the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the LORD of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
Isa 61:2  To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, (Lk 4:20 gap ) and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn 66:24 look upon the carcases of men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; they be an abomination
Mk 11:13 fig tree having leaves, He went to see if perhaps He would find something on it. When He came, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. 14 Let no one eat fruit from you ever again. 21The fig tree which You cursed has withered away

C. “Eternal” Fire (prop: of The Age) is not the Lake of Fire (Rev 20:15 where the Devil and pagans spend eternity), but the garbage dump of Ghenna(literally;incorrectly translated “hell”) where unprofitable works are burned up 1Cor 3:15 cf.Mt 16:27; 1Cor 3:13; 2Cor 5:10; Rm 2:6; 14:12; 1Pte 1:17; Rev 2:23
Mt 5:22 angry w/ his brother w/o a cause shall be in danger of the judgment...you fool, shall be in danger of Gehenna 1067  fire.
Mt 5:29-30  eye/hand offend you...cast it from you for it is profitable for you...whole  body should be cast into Gehenna 1067 cf Jn 3:16^
Mt 10:28 don't fear them which kill the body...not soul:  rather fear Him who is able to destroy^ both soul & body in Gehenna 1067 Lk 12:5
Mt 18:9 eye offend...cast it from thee: it is better to enter into life with one eye...be cast into Gehenna 1067 fire  cf Mk 9:43-47 not quenched
Mt 23:33 serpents,,,vipers, how can you escape the judgment/damnation of Gehenna 1067? 38 Your house is left to you desolate; 39 you shall see Me no more till you say, 'Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!' " Js 3:6  wheel of nature is set on fire of Gehenna (12x in NT)

D. Hades Mt 11:23  Capernaum  Lk 10:15, exalted to heaven, shall be brought down to Hades #86 OT Sheol/grave16:18 gates of Hades not prevail
Lk 16:23 in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and sees Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom (upper/lower)  ?11 NT
Acts 2:27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in Hades, neither wilt you permit your  Holy One to see corruption. 31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in Hades/grave, neither his flesh did see corruption. Rev 6:8 rider
Rev 20:13 sea  death & Hades 1:18 keys; 6:8; 1Cor 15:55 Hos 13:14 delivered up the dead which were in them: they were judged, every man acc to their works 

E. The Lake of Fire is the Second Death  Rev 20:14 And death and hell/Hades were cast into the Lake of Fire. This is the 2nd death  Cx 2Pt 2:4
Rev 20:15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire. Cx part/portion ????? 3313 Rev 20:6 21:8 22:19
Rev 2:11 He that overcomes shall not be hurt by the 2nd death. 20:6 Blessed and holy is he that has part in the 1st resurrection: on such the 2nd death has no power...priests/reign 1000 years. .21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving/unfaithful, abominable, and murderers... sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their portion in the Lake which burns with Fire and brimstone: which is the 2nd death.

Questions for Reflection/Discussion/Response:

1. Where do we get our ideas of heaven and hell and their occupants? What verses? How do you differentiate the Kingdom from the Eternal State?
2. In what is your faith Heb 11:6? For what are you believing God? How is that faith tested? What is your hope? How will that be realized?
3. How has your thinking about life and the future changed and what fruitfulness resulted? What fruit/works (righteousness) will endure ?
