2 Tim 2:22 Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faithfulness, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure/clean heart
I. A Pure Heart (Holy and Whole) is not only Possible but the Pre-requisite for Blessing and Fellowship
1Tim 6:11 But you, O man of God, flee (1Cor 6:18) these things (pride, discontent, materialism, “theology,” love of money, lusts) and pursue righteousness, godliness, faithfulness, love, patience/endurance, humility. 12 Fight the good fight of faith (4:7), lay hold on eternal (of The Age) life (Dominion), to which you were invited...14 keep this commandment w/o spot, blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ's appearing,
Pursue= purposely chase the objective until you obtain it (Mt 5:6); [see TOYL on Truthbase.net for how to be objective driven] Righteousness=being careful to do what is right in God's sight (Mt 23:32; Ac 24:25; 1Jn 3:7); (has past, present, and future aspects) Godliness= knowing and doing all the gods require (see DTB on Titus 1); [1Th 1:11 your faith which is toward God; cf Phm 1:7] Faith(fulness)= loyally fulfilling covenantal obligations with the belief that we will be benefited if we do (Heb 11:6; Rm 3:3; Mt 23:23); Love= self-sacrificially doing what is another's highest good (Jn 3:16; 1Jn 3:16; Gal 5:22 also faithfulness); Endurance= perspective that enables us to remain under a burden (Heb 10:36); Humility= a lack of self interest expressed in submission to God's will and other-centered service (cf Phil 2:3); Call upon the Lord= express dependent prayerful confident trust (Rm 10:14 call on Him in whom they have...believed; 1Ch 16; Ps 18:3; 105:1; 116:13.17)
II. A Pure Heart Results in Blessing, Fellowship with God and with Like-Hearted Whole-Hearted Believers
Mt 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. (Ps 27:8; Hos 5:15 unfaithful..stumble..rejected..afflicted..repent...return..seek face..6:1-7) Ps 24:3 Who may ascend into the hill of Yahweh? Or who may stand in His holy place? 4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, nor sworn deceitfully. 5 He shall receive blessing from Yahweh and righteousness from the God of his salvation. 6 This is Jacob, the generation of those who seek Him, who seek Your face. Selah Ps 73:1 Truly God is good to Israel, to such as are pure in heart. Pr 20:9 Who can say, "I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin"? (see DTB on Ps 119:11 in Job 38-42)
III. A Pure Heart is a Product of Self-Purification and Purifying Fellowship
1Tim 1:5 Now the goal of the charge (v3 godly edification v4) is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith, 1Pt 1:22 Since you have purified your souls by obeying the truth thru the Spirit for a sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, Js 4:6 God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble 7 submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, you double-minded.
1Tim 6:4 he is proud, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with disputes and arguments over words, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil surmising, 5 useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that gain/winning is godliness (see literal Greek). From such withdraw yourself. 6 godliness with contentment is great gain...9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows
2Tim 2:12 If we endure, we shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us.13 If we are faithless, He remains faithful 21 if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work 22 Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faithfulness, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart 23 But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife. 24 And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, 25 in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, 26 and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will. 2Tim 3:1 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 unloving, unforgiving/trucebreakers, slanderers/diabolos, without self-control, savage, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!
Heb 10:22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled/purified from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering..24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching. 26 For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries.
Questions for Reflection/Discussion/Response: - Why do some folks think that having a pure heart is an impossibility, or something we already have if we've believed in Jesus?
- What keeps people from having a pure heart? How does one get a pure, cleansed, single-focused heart? How do values change?
- How would hanging around those who don't “call upon God with a pure heart” affect our holiness and relationship with God?
- What's the consequence for those who don't flee temporal desires (power/pleasure/posessions) and puruse the virtues in 2Tim 2:22?
- Exactly when and why did you “flee youthful desires,” and precisely how are you purposefully pursuing godly virtues and eternal life?
