Slaying our Secret Sloth Pt 3 Habitual disinclination to exertion © 2021 WF Cobb Truthbase.net DailyTruthbase.blog Pr 22:13; 26:13 The slothful says, there is a lion outside, I shall be slain in the streets. [preposterous false excuses and fears] IV. A Sluggards Life is much harder, difficult, and painful than a righteous, blessable, disciplined HS controlled life A. A Poor worker will be Poor; if we don't Rule ourselves/desires, we will be Ruled by others (or “victim” to consequences) Pr 10:4 He becomes poor that deals with a slack* 07423 hand: but hand of the diligent makes rich. [precious possession=diligence] Pr 10:26 As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that send him. [unfaithful; is a pain to others] Pr 12:24 The hand of the diligent will rule, but the lazy* man will be put to forced labor. [rule yourself or be ruled over (slave)] Pr 12:27 Slothful* does not roast his prey, but the precious possession of man is diligence [not reach objectives; no accomplishment joy] Pr 19:15 Slothfulness^ casts Hith into a deep sleep; and an idle* soul shall suffer hunger. [seduced by evil desires results in suffering] Isa 65:12 I called, you did not answer; I spoke, you did not hear, but did evil before My eyes, {cx righteousness} chose that in which I do not delight 13 Thus says Lord GOD: My servants shall eat, but you shall be hungry...thirsty; My servants shall rejoice, but you shall be ashamed Ecc 10:18 Because of laziness 06103^ the building decays, and thru idleness/inactivity of hands the house leaks/drops thru Pr 13:15 Good understanding gains favor, but the way of the unfaithful is hard. [no understanding?unfaithfulness?hardship] Pr 20:4 sluggard will not plow...cold; thus shall beg in harvest, and have nothing. [excuses for not taking action results in loss] B. Fantasy/Day-Dream Desires Kills, but Faithful Diligence Fulfills (since that's how God designed us) Pr 13:4 The soul of the sluggard desires, and has nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat. [dreams w/o diligence = nada] Pr 15:19 The way of the slothful is as hedge of thorns: but the way of the righteous is a highway. [unrighteous, painful/difficult life] Pr 19:24; 26:15 slacker buries his hand in his dish and will not even/grieves him to bring it to his mouth again. [starts...yet doesn't finish] Pr 21:25 Desire/craving of the slothful/lazy kills him; for his hands refuse to labor. 26 covets all day but the righteous give generously Pr 14:23 In all labor/toil/pain/hurt/hardship there is profit, but idle chatter leads only to poverty/folly. [make muscle, not excuses] Pr 21:5 plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty, but everyone who's hasty, surely to poverty. [planned process + labor yields product] Pr 28:20 faithful man will abound w/ blessings, but one who hastens to be rich will not go unpunished. [short-cuts haste make waste] APP: Pr 13:12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when the desire comes, it is a tree of life. [cf 13:19 ] Ps 81:10 “I am the LORD your God, Who brought you out of the land of Egypt; Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it. 11 But My people would not heed My voice, and Israel would have none of Me. 12 So I gave them over to their own stubborn heart, to walk in their own counsels. 13 Oh, that My people would listen to Me, that Israel would walk in My ways!” 15 The haters of the LORD would pretend submission to Him, but their fate would endure forever. 16 He would have fed them also with the finest of wheat; and with honey from the rock I would have satisfied you." Pr 13:10 By pride/arrogance/insolence {11x Ob 1:3 of heart deceives} comes nothing but strife, but with the well-advised is wisdom. Cf 13:20 Pr 19:20 Listen to advice and accept instruction that in the end (latter days) you will be wise NIV Pr 13:14 The law/instruction/custom of the wise is a fountain of life, to turn one away from the snares of death. Pr 13:18 Poverty and shame will come to him who disdains/refuses correction, but he who regards a rebuke will be honored. Pr 13:19 A desire accomplished is sweet to the soul, but it is an abomination to fools to depart from evil Pr 13:20 He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed. C. A Little Laziness Leads to a Large Loss, yet we Deceive ourselves, Minimizing the Consequences of our Sin (satanic-Gen 3) Pr 24:30 I went by the field of the slothful, by the vineyard of the man void of understanding* [lack heart*, insight, determination] 31 all overgrown with thorns; surface covered with nettles; its stone wall was broken down. [no maintenance; protection; production]
32 When I saw it, I considered it well*; I looked on it and received instruction: 33 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest 34 So shall your poverty come like a prowler, and your need like a bandit Pr 26:14 As the door turns upon his hinges, so does the slothful upon his bed. [activity w/o progress nor accomplishment] Pr 26:16 Sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than 7 men that can render a reason. [irrational conceit/pride; more hope for fool 26:12] No greater danger to the church than the sin of indifference. The sin of apathy. The sin that says we just do not care anymore. ”Sloth is the sin that believes in nothing, cares for nothing, seeks to know nothing, interferes with nothing, enjoys nothing, loves nothing, hates nothing, finds purpose in nothing, lives for nothing, and remains alive only because it has found nothing for which it is willing to die.” Dorothy Sayers A host of psychological symptoms can also signify the presence of acedia, which affects the mental/spiritual state and behavior of the afflicted.. ..lack of attention to daily tasks and an overall dissatisfaction with life.. ..tedium, boredom or general laziness. Norris in “Acedia and Me” asserts definitions such as torpor and sloth fail to do justice to this temptation; she believes a state of restlessness, of not living in the present and seeing the future as overwhelming/hopeless is more accurate a definition than straight laziness: it is especially present in monasteries, due to the cutting off distractions, but can invade any vocation where the labor is long, the rewards slow to appear, such as scientific research, long term marriages, etc. Another sign is a lack of caring, of being unfeeling about things, whether that be your appearance, hygiene, your relationships, your community's welfare, the world's welfare etc. all of this, Norris relates, is connected to the hopelessness and vague unease arising from having too many choices, lacking true commitment, of being "a slave from within". She relates this to forgetfulness about "the one thing needful": remembrance of God. Wiki Acedia |
