TOYL and Trouble

1994-01-01 Ps 90

I. Life Is Tough And Then You Die

1 A Prayer of Moses the man of God. Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. 2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you have formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, you art God. 3 You turn man to destruction; and say, Return, ye children of men. 4 For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night. 5 You carry them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: in the morning they are like grass which grows up. 6 In the morning it flourishes and grows up; in the evening it is cut down, and withers

Ps 89:47 Remember how short my time is: wherefore have you made all men in vain?

II. Life Is Tough And We Die Because of Our Sins (which God sees)

A.  God Is To Be  Feared

7 For we are consumed by your anger, and by your wrath are we troubled. 8 You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your countenance. 9 For all our days are passed away in your wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told. 10 The our years are 70; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet their span is TOYL and trouble; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

B. The Fear Of The Lord Is The Beginning Of Wisdom Pr 9:10

11 Who knows the power of your anger? even according to your fear, so is your wrath.

C. Wisdom is Choosing the Right Objectives and the Right Means of Attaining them

12 So teach us to number our days, that we may gain/present a heart of wisdom.

Heart = place where decisions are made

We make each day count when we live it in light of God’s future judgment

III. Life Gets Good When We Embrace God’s Objectives For Us

13 Return, O LORD, how long? and let it repent thee concerning your servants. 14 O satisfy us early with your mercy; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. 15 Make us glad according to the days wherein you have afflicted us, and the years wherein we have seen evil. 16 Let your work appear unto your servants, and your glory unto their children. 17 And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us: and establish you the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish you it.

Questions for Reflection/Discussion/Response:

1. Why don’t people come to grips with their mortality? How do they escape?

2. How do we “number our days”?  What does an “unnumbered” day look like?

3. Which Time Wasters should you eschew? Which Times Savers should you embrace?

4. How can you increase the percent of your time which is tied into your objectives?

5. Why should God give you another day to live? Why should He give 70-80 years?
