God of Revelation
Psalm 19 A Shouting Star BC 11/96
I. God Reveals Himself Through Nature
A. The Heavens are designed to reveal God’s power and wisdom (General Revelation)
1 The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows his handiwork. 2 Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night shows knowledge. 3 There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.
Rom 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; 19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God has shown it unto them. 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: 21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
B. The Sun reflects well on (glorifies) God by performing in its specified role
4 Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them has he set a tabernacle for the sun, 5 Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoices as a strong man to run a race. 6 His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.
II. God Reveals Himself Through Scripture
A. The Word of God is designed to reveal God’s power and wisdom (Specific Revelation-intended effect)
7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting/restoring the soul:
the testimony of the LORD is sure/reliable, making wise the simple.
8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart:
the commandment of the LORD is pure/bright, enlightening the eyes:
9 The fear of the LORD is clean/without dross, enduring for ever:
the judgments of the LORD are true/truth and righteous altogether.
10 More to be desired/valued are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter/delightful also than honey and the honeycomb.
B. The Servant reflects well on (glorifies) God by performing in his/her specified role
11 Moreover by/in them is your servant warned/admonished: and in keeping of them there is great reward.
12 Who can understand his errors/wanderings? cleanse me from secret faults.
13 Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins (taking God for granted); let them not have dominion over me:
then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.
14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my Strength, and my Redeemer.
