Gal 5 Fundamentals/Foundations of Fruit-bearing  (c) 2016 WF Cobb Truthbase.net DailyTruthbase.blogspot

I. Dynamic of Dependence/Abiding: Spirit of God (Truth) uses the Word of God (Truth) to produce in us the Mind of Christ (Jn 14:6)

We glorify God by submitting to His plan for us to be fruit bearing disciples  alternative is fruit of flesh resulting in shame/loss -1Cor 3

Jn 14:21-23 If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him.

Jn 15:2 Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes/cleans, that it may bear more fruit. 3 You are clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. (motive, direction & strength)

5 I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.

6 If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned. 7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.8 By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples. 16 You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.

Mt 3:1-12 8 bear fruits in keeping with repentance  7:19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire  Lk 3:10

Eph 5:6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore do not be partakers with them; 8 for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light 9 (for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and faithfulness), 10 manifesting what is pleasing to the Lord.

Jn 14:17,28;15:26;16:8-13;17:17; Phil 24-6; Eph 4:20-27; 5:17-21; Rm 12:1-2; Col 3:16-18;1Cor 3:12-15;Isa 40:10;

II. Fruit is always the result of seed  (word of God), soil (fertile heart), and cultivation (Spirit -light, water, weeding, time/maturity).

Gal 6:8 sows to his own flesh...reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life (dominion of The Age)

Rm 6:21 What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. 22 But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit eis holiness, and the end/telios, everlasting life.

Mt 13:19 NO COMPRENDO hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. 20 ROCKY places, this is the man who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; 21 no firm root in himself, but is only temporary, and when affliction or persecution arises because of the word...falls away. 22 WEEDY sown among the thorns, this is the man who hears the word, and the worry of the world and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.  23 GOOD soil, this is the man who hears the word and understands it; who indeed bears fruit and brings forth, 100x, 60x, 30x

2Cor 9:10 may He who supplies seed to the sower, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness

Ps 1:1 How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers! 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. 3 He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers.

C. Causes of crop failure (carnality,  no die to self: unsanctified 1Pt 1:22,  darkness, disease, no metamorphosis, immaturity, give up)

Jn 12:24 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal. Cf 1Cor 15:58

Rm 7:4 die..thru the body of Christ, so that you might be joined to Him..raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. 5 while we were in the flesh, the sinful passions...were at work in the members of our body to bear fruit for death.

D. Mindset  is key Rm 8:5 those who are acc to the flesh set their minds on  things of the flesh, but those who are acc to the Spirit,  things of the Spirit. 6 For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, 7 bec the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, 8 those who are in the flesh cannot please God.  Heb 11:6 without faith it is impossible to please Him..must believe..that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.  Cf Rm 12:1-2

Gal 6:7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap.

8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. 9 Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary. Eph 2:10; 2Tim :16-17

Gal 5:16 Walk in/by the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law 21...those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 24 Now those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires  Gal 2:20  25 If we live in/by the Spirit, let us also walk in/by the Spirit.

Questions for Reflection/Discussion/Response:

1. Does abiding and fruit-bearing happen automatically? Do all believers bear HS fruit? Why/why not? What are the consequences?

2. What is the origin of the flesh (desire for the temporal goodies)? 1Jn 2:16  What keeps the seed from reproducing? Mt 13:22-23

3. What do people repent (change mind) about when they become believers? What do you tend to naturally set your mind on?

4.  How can we not grieve or quench the HS? How can we deepen our ability to get more of the Spirit of Grace? How crucify flesh?

5.  How would the various aspects of the fruits of the Spirit (as you understand them) be a preventative/corrective to the works of the flesh?
