Retreat Q&A Thoughts and Holiness © F2021 2022 WF Cobb Truthbase.net DailyTruthbase.blog

Q9. Why do we do what we do? A. Cz we want to?

Why do we want what we want/do? Cz we believe it's in our best (self)-interests.

Pr 23:7 As you think/put a value/reckon in your heart so you are!!!

Q10. Why is holiness important? A. To share in Divine nature.

Is it supposed to be hard or easy? Yoke and grace to bear it.

1Pt 1:13a So prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control*

4:7 end of all things at hand: sober/sound-minded & watch eis prayer 8 fervent in love

5:8 Be sober* be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, roaring lion, walks about, seeking..whom he may devour

1Thess 5:6 not sleep, as do others; watch and be sober*

8 of the day, be sober* putting on the breastplate of faith and love; helmet=hope of salvation

2Tim 4:5 watch* in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry..

13b Put all your hope in the grace/glory that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world.

14 So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then.

15 now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy.

16 Scriptures say “You must be holy because I am holyLev 11:44 19:2 20:7 cut off !!!

17 remember that the heavenly Father to whom you pray has no favorites. 4He will judge or reward you acc to what you do. So you must live in fear of Him during sojourn (Egypt) “campers” NLT

Q9. Why do we do what we do? A. Cz we want to?

Why do we want what we want/do? Cz we believe it's in our best (self)-interests. Pr 23:7

Why do we think it's in our best interests?

Cz our values, formed by our heart/culture/upbringing/(incorrectly perceived and processed) experiences, say it's better to do/not do.

We've not trained ourselves to deny our ego/self, but indulge and gratify demonic desires

Temporal: Power (security/significance), Pleasure, Possessions.

Heart mind connection, the unholy heart takes captive/programs the unsanctified mind to (subconsciously) pursue satan's will for our life/death.

Difficult cz of neural ruts. We can know what's right but don't do,=sin (value acc Truth, put off, transform mind, reprogram robot, put on)

Col 3:11 if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

2 Set your mind/affection on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.

3 For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God

4 When Christ, who is our life/Vine is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.

5 Put to death/consider Rm 8:13 NASB the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity*, passion (a feeling which the mind suffers) , evil desire (longing/craving) and greed=idolatry.

1Th 2:3 exhort not of deceit, nor of uncleanness*(luxurious, profligate living, impure motives) nor guile/treachery

6 For it is because of these things that the wrath of God will come upon the sons of disobedience,

8 Put off: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth.

9 Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices,

10 and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge acc to the image...created him--

12 chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience;

13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you.

14 Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.

15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful.

16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing/warning one another, with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

17 Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks thru Him to God the Father.

Q10. Why is holiness important? A. To share in Divine nature.

Is it supposed to be hard or easy? Yoke and grace to bear it. 2Cor 9:8

2Pt 1:2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you by the epi-knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord; 3 seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, thru the epi-knowledge of Him who called us to dative His own glory and excellence.

4 For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises,

so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature,

having escaped the corruption flee 2:18,20 end worse that is in the world by lust

5 Now for this very reason also applying all diligence, in your faith supply

moral excellence-knowledge-self-control-perseverance
godliness-brotherly kindness/affection-love.

8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither

useless nor unfruitful* in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

9 For he who lacks these qualities is blind or short-sighted,

having forgotten he received cleansing from his former sins.

*Mk 4:18 And others are the ones on whom seed was sown among the thorns; these are the ones who have heard the word,

19 but the worries of the world, cf Mt 6:33 seek first

and the deceitfulness of riches, cf 1Tim 6:8-11 flee...pursue

and the desires for other things cf 1Jn 2:15-17 flesh...eyes...pride [PPP]

enter in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful* cf Jn 15 burned

Beware: subjective experience often blinds us to the Word we must believe/(faith)

(e.g. Disciples-glory-suffering)

1Tim 6:8 If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content. =(6:6 great gain)

9 But those who want/will/intend/purpose to get rich fall into temptation and a snare

and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction.

10 For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it

have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

11 But flee from these things, you man of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness,

faith, love, perseverance and meekness.

12 Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal/THE AGE life to which you were called

2Tim 2:21 Therefore, if anyone cleanses* (ek-prune) himself from these things, he will be

a vessel for honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work.

*1Cor 5:7 leaven of malice & wickedness vs sincerity & truth

22 Now flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.

2Pt 1:10 be all the more diligent to make firm your calling and choosing; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble;

11 for in this way entrance into The Age kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you.

2Cor 7:1 having these promises (of an intimate family rlshp with God)

let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, (1Jn 1:9)

perfecting/accomplishing holiness in the fear of God.

2Cor 6:14 Do not be unequally yolked together (mismatched Phil 4:3 true yolkfellow)

with unfaithful/unbelieving/incredulous/unpersuaded; Lk 9:19 disciples 12:46 faithless servant;

Jn 20:27 Thomas;1Cor 7:14 sanctified by spouse; 2Cor 4:4 blinded to glory; 1Tim 5:8 deny faith; Titus 1:14-16 turn from Truth-profession w/o practice; Rev 21:8 outside the gate-no inherit

for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness?

15 Or what harmony has Christ with Belial/satan, or what has a faithful person in common with an unfaithful person?

16 Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols?

For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said,

"I will dwell in them and walk among them; I will be their God, and they shall be My people. Lev 26:12, 14 but if you do not obey...

17 "Therefore, come out from their midst and be separate," says the Lord.

"And do not touch what is unclean; And I will welcome you.

18 And I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to Me,"

Says the Lord Almighty.

Isa 52:11 Depart! Depart! Go out from there, touch no unclean thing;

Go out from the midst of her, Be clean, You who bear the vessels of the LORD.

Rev 18:4 And I heard another voice from heaven saying, “Come out of her, my people,

lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues. (Babylon=false religion)

Dt 7:6 you are a holy people to the LORD your God;

the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.

9 Know that YHWH your God, He is God, the faithful God,

who keeps His covenant and His hesed 1k w/ those who love Him and keep His commandments

10 but repays those who hate Him to their faces, to destroy them; not delay..him who hates..He will repay 11 Thus keep commandments...I am commanding you today, to do them.

Entire Sanctification is Entirely Wrong

The Holiness Movement believes that the "second work of grace" (or "second blessing") refers to a personal experience subsequent to regeneration, in which the believer is cleansed from original sin."In this line of thinking, a person is first saved, at which point he is justified and born again. Following this, he experiences a period of growth...This ultimately culminates in a second work of grace whereby the Holy Spirit cleanses his heart of original sin, literally eradicating all inbred sin. The Holy Spirit then imparts His indwelling presence, empowering the believer...This is the baptism of the Holy Spirit. It happens instantaneously as the believer presents self as a living sacrifice to God with an attitude of full consecration," and faith. Wiki

1885 Declaration of Principles: "Entire Sanctification... is that great work subsequent to regeneration, by the Holy Ghost, upon the sole condition of faith...such faith being preceded by an act of solemn and complete consecration. This work has these distinct elements:

1. The entire extinction of the carnal mind, the total eradication of the birth principle of sin

2. The communication of perfect love to the soul... 3. The abiding indwelling of the Holy Ghost.

Nazarene Church:"We believe that entire sanctification is that act of God, subsequent to regeneration, by which believers are made free from original sin, or depravity, and brought into a state of entire devotement to God, and the holy obedience of love made perfect. It is wrought by the baptism with or infilling of the Holy Spirit, and comprehends in one experience the cleansing of the heart from sin and the abiding, indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, empowering the believer for life and service. Entire sanctification is provided by the blood of Jesus, is wrought instantaneously by grace through faith, preceded by entire consecration; and to this work and state of grace the Holy Spirit bears witness."

There are "five cardinal elements" in the doctrine of entire sanctification.

"Entire Sanctification is a Second work of Grace

Entire Sanctification is received Instantaneously

3. Entire Sanctification -- Frees from Sin "the consensus understanding of sin in the Holiness tradition is that sin is an avoidable, voluntary, morally responsible act that those born of God do not commit. Wesley: "Nothing is sin, strictly speaking, but a voluntary transgression of a known law of God. Therefore, every voluntary breach of the law of love is sin; and nothing else, if we speak properly. To strain the matter farther is only to make way for Calvinism."[19]

Entire Sanctification -- Is Attainable in This Life

Entire Sanctification -- and the Baptism with the Holy Spirit are Simultaneous"[12]

With this definition of sin, Holiness adherents believe while Christians may fall into sin, they also have the God-given power to avoid committing sin, and in this sense be free from sin.

"The lowest type of a Christian sinneth not, and is not condemned. The minimum of salvation is salvation from sinning. The maximum is salvation from pollution -- the inclination to sin."

"It should ever be born in mind that believers cannot commit sin without forfeiting justification.“If a believer wilfully sins, he casts away his faith. Neither is it possible he should have justifying faith again, without previously repenting."

Holiness groups believe the moral aspects of the law of God are pertinent for today, and expect their adherents to obey behavioral rules...prohibit smoking, drinking, dancing, listening to inappropriate worldly music, or wearing makeup or flashy clothes."[27]

1Pt 2: 1 Therefore, putting aside all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander

2 like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation, 3 if you have tasted the benevolence of the Lord

4 And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been rejected by men, but is choice and precious in the sight of God, 5 you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God thru Jesus Christ.

8 they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, to this doom they were also appointed.

9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;10 for you once were not a people, but now you are the people of God; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

11Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts/desires which wage war against the soul.

Heb 12:10 He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness.

11 All discipline for the moment seems not joyful, but sorrowful;

yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.

12 Therefore, strengthen the hands that are weak and the knees that are feeble,

13 make straight paths for your feet, so that the limb which is lame may not be put out of joint, but rather be healed.

14 Pursue peace with all men, and the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.

Mt 11:28 Come to me, weary and carry heavy burdens, I will give you refresh.

29 Take my yoke upon you. Learn from Me, cz I am meek and humble at heart, you will find release for your souls

30 For my yoke is beneficial to bear, burden I give you is less oppressive.

2Cor 9:8 God is able to make all grace/power abound to you,

so always having all sufficiency in everything, abundance for every good deed

12:9 'My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness' boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me

1Thess 3:12 may the Lord cause you to increase and abound in love for one another, and for all people

13 so that He may establish your hearts w/o blame in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus & saints

4:1 received of us how you ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more.

3 For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that you should abstain from...

4 That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honor;

5 Not in lust...as the Gentiles which know not God:

6 not go beyond and take gain/advantage of brother in any matter:

Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified.

7 For God has not called us to uncleanness, but to holiness.

Eph 4:24 and put on the new self, which in likeness of God has been created by righteousness and holiness of the truth 25 speak truth
