4 Certain men have crept in unnoticed...ungodly, who turn the grace of our God into lawless caprice - deny the only Lord God  and JC

7 desiring to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm NIV 18 wage the good warfare, 19 having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck,

1Pt 1:22 have purified your souls by obeying the truth thru the Spirit for sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart...born...word

1Tim 6:2 these things teach and exhort. 3 If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to sound words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with godliness,4 he is proud, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with disputes and arguments over words, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions, 5 useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. From such withdraw yourself.

2 Cor 11:13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming  themselves into apostles of Christ.14 And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be acc to their works. 

I. Truth best explains all the facts; found at the convergence of Revelation -understood in context, Reason -logical consistency, and Reality -sets free from sin reproductive rlshp w/ God thru transformed mind/values/feelings/actions. Mt 28:20 2Tim 2:2 are u a T or F teacher?

God has spoken and not stuttered; cannon is closed; only way finite know infinite is if revealed. Authenticated Spokesman. 

Pre-modern= there is Truth and it comes from the gods; Modernism=there is truth, and it comes from human Reason. 

Post-Modernism=there may be Truth, but we can't know it. (There is absolutely no absolute truth).

Liberalism is an arrogant self-centered worldview  that is free to determine truth and judge history by present provincial experience

Jn 8:30 As He spoke these words many believed in Him. 31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." 1Pt 1:23 born again by word

Jn 12:48 He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him; the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.

2Pt 1:16 For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17 For He received from God the Father honor and glory when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." 18 And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. 19 And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts Rev 2:28; 20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, 21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.. vs Demonic False Prophecy (cf Charismatic)

II. Worship=Response to Revelation Abe-Gen 22  not just emotion, but cognitive, volitional, sacrificial action heart/mind/soul/strength-Lk 10:27  Fruit of lips that praise name...do good and share God pleased -Heb 13:15-16;  Why call me Lord and don't do what I say-Lk 6:46 

Mysticism, subjective experiences/feelings, ecstatic speech, mystery religions. Cx contemplative prayer vs contemplate word and obedience 

Charismatic, emotional concert; trips to heaven, direct revelation/prophecy from God; Faith in faith vs in Word in context. Cognitive.

Lord teach us to pray -Lk 11:1;  Watch & pray worthy to escape -Lk 21:36; Let your requests be made known to God Phil 4:8; Be still and know  Ps 46:10

III. Uncritical Unity;  Crazy crowd (ecumenical or everybody OK); seeker pleasing vs holy Body of Christ/priesthood, 1Pt 2 bound together Eph 4:15;  same mind and judgment 1 Cor 1:10 one accord-mind Phil 2:2   Jesus came to bring sword and separation; Denomination dominion 

2 Cor 6:14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? 15 And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? 16 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. God said:" I will dwell in them and walk among them..I will be their God, and they shall be My people" 17 Therefore "Come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you."

IV. Material vs Spiritual. Prosperity; Broadway-populist  worth and value and goals from material , no weak, worldlings 

Pr 22:4 By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches and honor and life.  1Tim 6:10 the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves thru with many sorrows. Mt 6:33 Seek ye first!!

V. IrResponsible Grace (lawless-legalism)  Reformed Fatalism (Cov't vs Biblical Theology) vs HS led Responsibility – Rm 8; work out salvation Phil 2:13,  free will -whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely Rev 22:17;   know teaching if willing/determined to do it -Jn 7:17

2 Cor 6::1 as workers together with Him also plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain. 2Pt 3:18 grow in grace;  grace is power 2 Cor 12

1 Cor 5:10 by grace..am what I am, His grace toward me was not in vain; I labored more abundantly than..yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me

Questions for Reflection/Discussion/Response:

1. How does a finite being know infinite Truth? Jesus died=Historical Fact; How do you know He died for your sins, it determines your eternity?

2. How does Biblical YHWH differ from pagan worship? How do you worship your Creator God? Is He pleased with your rlshp with Him?

3. How can you recognize a false teacher? Popularity(narrow way?)? Fruit (whatever that is??) Miracles? Spec Revelation/Experiences?

4. What motivates a false teacher? Why do people embrace and follow them? Where is the Holy Spirit of God in convicting and guiding?
