Leaven of the Pharisees vs the KEY TO KNOWLEDGE (correct interpretation) (c) 2017 WF Cobb Truthbase.netLk 12:1 Watch/beware leaven of Pharisees, which is hypocrisy/(teaching Mt 16 Mk 8) Lk 11 Demanding a sign/additional proof rather than being responsive to the sufficient Truth God has already given. 11:28 "More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!" 29 This is an evil generation. It seeks a sign, and no sign will be given except the sign of Jonah the prophet. 30 For as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so also the Son of Man will be to this generation. 31 The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here.
11:34 The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness. 35 Therefore take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness. 36 If then your whole body will be full of light, as when the bright shining of a lamp gives you light."
Mk 8:15 “beware of the leaven of Pharisees and Herod” 16 ...reasoned "It is because we have no bread." 17 But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, "Why do you reason because you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive nor understand? Is your heart still hardened? 18 Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember? Lack of trust in God results in losing sight of spiritual realities and focusing and trusting in only what the eye/(senses) can see. Eventually, like yeast, it will permeate all of a person's life, erupting in open/demonic rebellion against God's rule and Word (cf Peter) Mt 16:6 Then Jesus said to them, "Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees." 7 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, "It is because we have taken no bread." 8 But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, "O you of little faith, why do you reason among yourselves because you have brought no bread? 9 Do you not yet understand, or remember the five loaves of the five thousand and how many baskets you took up? 10 Nor the seven loaves of the four thousand and how many large baskets you took up? 11 How is it you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread? --- but to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees." 12 Then they understood that He did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine/teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. Woe vs Key to Knowledge Lk 11:52 "Woe to you lawyers/Scribes! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You did not enter in yourselves, and those who were entering in you hindered." 53 Pharisees began to assail Him vehemently, and to cross-examine Him about many things, 54 lying in wait for Him, and seeking to catch Him in something He might say, that they might accuse Him. Pharisees/hypocrites often accuse others to take the convicting light of the Truth from shining on themselves. Teach theology/doctrine vs Truth and Truth-following Mt 15:7 Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you: 8 'These people draw near to Me with their mouth, and honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. 9 And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men. (Teach select portions of NT ignoring the whole counsel of God and the OT) 2Tim 3:16-17 All Scripture...profitable to equip Teach tradition vs Truth and Truth-following (Proof-text vs Context) Rules and Rituals (external) vs Relationship and Reality (internal) Mt 15:3 "Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? 6 Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition. Promote a version rather than Promoting how to study, understand, and apply/obey the Bible 2Tim 2:14 Charge them before the Lord not to strive about words to no profit, to the ruin of the hearers. 15 Study/Be diligent/Do your best to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 16 But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness. Party line and union vs Pious path and unity Mt 7:13 "Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. Encouragement with experience vs Edification with explanation of Truth Rm 15:2 Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, leading to edification. 3 For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, "The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me." 4 For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the endurance and encouragement of the Scriptures might have hope. 5 Now may the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus, 6 that you may with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 14 Now I an confident concering you, my brethren, that you also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another. Col 3:16 Word dwell richly...teach and admonish one another Make temporally happy vs Make holy and eternally happy Look good to men for carnal benefit vs Look good to God for eternal reward (lay up treasure) Comfort the comfortable vs Comfort the afflicted and afflict/convict the comfortable Teach conformity and cultural accommodation vs Cultural enlightenment and transformation Tell people what they want to hear vs what God wants them to hear 2Tim 4::2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires/lusts, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth
Teach self-fulfillment vs self-denial & Faithfulness Lk 9:23 "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. 24 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. 25 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost? 26 For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, of him the Son of Man will be ashamed when He comes in His own glory, and in His Father's, and of the holy angels. Greed (how to get more) vs Godliness (how to grow, and give more) Mentorship (how to get ahead in life) vs Discipleship (how to have a blessed life and eternal life) Mt 28:18 Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 As you go make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe/obey all things that I have commanded you; and I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen |
