Jude 3 Contending for Salvation and The Faith
1 Those sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ=The Called: 2 Mercy to you and peace; and love be multiplied to you 3a Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, 3b I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for The Faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. I. True believers need to combat/fight the false teaching of ungodly believers by knowing and doing what God has revealed Titus 4 For certain men have crept in unnoticed...ungodly (not know nor do) men, who turn the grace of our God into“lawless insolence and wanton caprice" (Trench) [no moral nor legal restraint] and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ. 2Pt 2:1 But there were also false prophets (comfort in sin=no judgment) among the people, even as there will be false teachers (comfort in sin=all under grace/no consequences) among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies/(choosing own way/opinion/aim), even denying/rejecting the Lord who bought/redeemed them, and bring on themselves swift destruction Mt 7:13 broad-way 2 And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed/spoken against/reviled. II. Salvation reverses the effects of the Fall, yielding freedom from the penalty-past/power-present/presence-future of sin. A. Justification=requires change of mind re sin and consequences ?sin payment paid?forgiveness?HS relationship w/ God in Christ Rm 3:24 being justified freely by His grace thru the redemption that is in Christ Jesus 25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, thru faith 26 to demonstrate...His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus Rm 5:8 God demo His love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 having been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath thru Him.10...reconciled to God thru the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. Titus 3:5 not by works of righteousness...but acc to His mercy He saved us, thru the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit 7 that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs acc to the hope of eternal life dominion of The Age B. Sanctification=requires change of mind/values/actions ?obedience ?progressive Holiness?deeper relationship w/ God and eternal life Rm 6:22 now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life Col 32 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 4 When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. 5 Therefore put to death....covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 'cs of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, 8 put off all these: anger, wrath, malice,...9 Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds,10 and have put on the new C. Glorification=requires transformed mind/life re this world ?Christlike service, and glory in His Millennial Kingdom/Age Rm 2;6 Who "will render to each one acc to his deeds":7 eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality, 8 but to self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness-- indignation and wrath, 9 tribulation and anguish, on every soul who does evil 10 but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, 1Pt 1:born again to a living hope thru resurrection...4 to an inheritance reserved...5 trails... result in praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of JC 9 receiving the end of your faith--the salvation of your souls.13 rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to you III. Contending for the Faith requires the ability to counteract Satan's lies and half truths, so believers get blessed vs wrath 1Cor 15:1 Brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received/accepted and in which you stand, 2 by which also you are being-pres saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you--unless you believed aor in vain (no profit) Apostle's/(Nicine) Creed: I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; He ascended into heaven, He is seated at the right hand of the Father, and He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic/universal Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. All saints, that are united to Jesus Christ their Head, by his Spirit, and by faith, have fellowship with him in his graces, sufferings, death, resurrection, and glory: and, being united to one another in love, they have communion in each other’s gifts and graces, and are obliged to the performance of such duties, public and private, as do conduce to their mutual good, both in the inward and outward man. - Westminster Confession of Faith Chr 26 Of the Communion of Saints Sec 1
Titus 3:8 faithful/trustworthy saying...those who have believed in God should be careful to maintain good works...good and profitable to men. 1Tim 1:15 faithful/trustworthy saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners 3:1 This is a faithful saying: If a man desires overseeship/bishop, he desires a good work. 4:8 godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. 9 This is a faithful/trustworthy saying and worthy of all acceptance. 2Tim 2:10 I endure all things...elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 11 This is a faithful saying: For if a1 we died with Him, we shall also live with Him. 1 2 If b1 we endure, we shall also reign with Him. If b2 we deny Him, He also will deny us. 13 If a2 we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself. Questions for Reflection/Discussion/Response: 1. Why is there controversy over whether salvation is by faith or works? Js 2:14 no works...save him 17 dead faith? What is it? 2. What are the essentials that a person need to believe to be “saved” /(forgiven), holy, and be pleasing to God (glorified)?. 3. If a Christian daily recited the Apostle's Creed would God be pleased and would they get the reserved salvation for which God saved them? 4. How do you “fight the good fight” 1Tim 6:12 and “contend for the faith”? How easily can you explain the different aspects of salvation? |
